“We shall swim out to that brooding reef in the sea and dive down through black abysses to Cyclopean and many-columned Y’ha-nthlei, and in that lair of the Deep Ones we shall dwell amidst wonder and glory for ever.” – H.P. Lovecraft, The Shadow Over Innsmouth

Deep One Physiology

Deep Ones are nocturnal amphibian grotesques that come from the depths of the sea. They resemble fishlike, lurching humanoids that lop along when they move and sport lidless, bulging eyes. Their clawed hands and feet are webbed, and their sickly green skin is slick and rubbery with spiny ridges along their back and joints.

The Deep One Curse

When not spawned in underwater caves, Deep Ones can also be created through a magical curse passed on through mystical incantations in the Esoteric Order of Father Dagon or Mother Hydra. Some of these cursed individuals—or blessed, depending on their point of view—start their existence as human-looking children living in coastal villages. Around their mid-to-late thirties (or after severe stress), the cursed one starts to dream of living underwater, and then eventually undergoes the painful transformation into a Deep One. Few can resist the call of the deep once it begins.

“The Deep Ones could never be destroyed, even though the palæogean magic of the forgotten Old Ones might sometimes check them. For the present they would rest; but some day, if they remembered, they would rise again for the tribute Great Cthulhu craved.” – H.P. Lovecraft,The Shadow Over Innsmouth
